Being creative allows the opportunity for us to produce great and innovative results as people in anything we do. Inspiration is a great way to get creative, but let's face it: finding inspiration isn't always the easiest thing to do. Inspiration can be fleeting; here in one minute and gone in the next until it eventually leaves and stays away for far too long. This is why it is important for as creative people, to take action to get inspired. When in your moments of "creative drought", or uninspired episodes, be sure to use these 5 ways to get and stay inspired as a creative!
Expand Your Vision
Creative individuals know all too well what it is like to feel "stuck". As a writer, I've had my share of "writer's block", and even as a designer, I've had my bouts with the creative process. The problem is, as creative individuals, we can develop slight boredom, and a cloudy vision because of comfort and routine. Creative individuals need expansion and exposure to fresh elements in the world. Going without these two can result in creative stagnation. The next time you're feeling "stuck", "tired of the same old thing", and uninspired, try expanding your vision by going to view art, sight-seeing, putting yourself amid a new crowd, or even mingling with other creative in industries other than your own.
Being a creative is of course a blessing, however, there are also many struggles within such a gift. Many of us may never admit the stress of perfection, self-criticism, and fear that has yielded our results, sense of urgency, and action. Because we tend to take inspired action in all of our creative ventures, it is likely that we can become complacent, and almost lazy (ew). No one is standing over us, telling us what to do, there are no deadlines, and quite frankly, we could forget this whole "creative life" and be completely ordinary, but the reality is: OUR CREATIVE PASSION((S) WILL NEVER LEAVE US ALONE. Therefore, we must find a way to escape the lazy, idle moments that wither away our inspiration. One way to do this is by simply challenging one's self. Set a deadline, start a project (and finish it), step out on faith to get something done, set different intentions, or initiate a 21-Day Habit Change.
One aspect of being a creative individual is our super-ambitious ways. How awesome, right? Well...those super-ambitious ways can easily morph into superbly-psycho-ambitious ways (okay, so maybe I exaggerated a bit), but such drive and ambition can cause the creative person to become obsessed, restless, constantly "working", "grinding" and "hustling", and to proudly proclaim to be "always busy". However, one thing I've learned since embracing my creative passions is that being over-worked is no badge of honor, being busy is not the same thing as being productive, I need my beauty sleep, and most importantly, "quiet time" is so underrated. When was the last time that you did nothing, stressed nothing, slept in, had a god day-dreaming session, meditated, or sat alone in a quiet room for an hour ? A lot of times, our moments of being uninspired come because we are simply stretching ourselves to far, and doing far too much. Try making room for quiet time without trying to force inspiration. Various greats throughout history note their prestigious moments of inspiration which came from quiet time, daydreaming, or sitting alone in a room.
Mix With Other Creatives
"Iron sharpens iron". This statement is true for many things in life, and can also be applied to creative individuals. As creatives, we have so much in common, yet we differ greatly. A nice dose of inspiration can come from being around other individuals who respect and understand the creative process, embraces creativity, honors passion, and isn't afraid of opening their mind. Get inspiration from creative networking events, one-on-one sessions with other creatives you admire, mastmermind groups, or a simple telephone chat. Engaging with other creatives can keep you inspired by providing encouragement or different vies and ideas that may have never come to you while alone.
